Instagram Psycolourgy collage on board
Three months ago I reached out to 550 people in my Instagram DM’s. I asked them to send me a colour and a word that they associated with that colour, a process I call ‘Psycolourgy’. The result was an entirely abstract work assembled chronologically, left to right in 19 rows of 29.
Many of the entries came to me with personal stories, some of which were extraordinarily poignant. It ended up becoming far more than I had anticipated… bringing people together in a time of isolation and division, quite emotional at times. I found the process particularly fascinating, as I had no idea how it was going to end up looking; I was merely the facilitator, offering a platform to you, the creators.
WHAAM Print release
Smith's reworking of the Lichtenstein classic 'Whaam' was easily one of the standout and most popular images from his most recent solo exhibition 'Pioneers'. We are delighted to announce the release of a print edition available on Thursday 27th May at 4pm BST via RHODES Editions drop site.
For this low edition release, we've taken it to a scale where the image can be truly appreciated at its best and added a high-gloss screen overlay that can only be fully admired in the flesh. This is one of the largest scale editions Smith has released, coupled with the smaller edition run and the sheer popularity of the image itself, and suddenly, it has all the hallmarks of a future classic.
'My reworking of Lichtenstein’s original painting is really a reworking of a reworking. Lichtenstein took the composition from a comic to a canvas, turning something that wasn’t considered art into art. I thought I’d repay the favour and turn it into a Nick Smith.'
- Nick Smith, 2021

The text located under each 'colour chip' continues upon his Psycolourgy series. In this series, Smith incorporated his method of word-colour associations he has coined “psycolourgy”, combining text and image to create intriguing and provocative collaged works.
On the surface, we see colour-chips that playfully pixelate iconic artwork and popular culture, but if we step closer, the image is abstracted and the words become readable. Each pixel corresponds to a word, creating either complimentary or subversive meanings.

Nick Smith NFT's | 'Van Gogh', 'Mona Lisa', 'Girl With A Pink Earring'
LAUNCHING NEXT WEEK: NICK SMITH NFT's
Mona Lisa | Van Gogh | Girl With A Pink Earring
In collaboration with
RHODES Contemporary Art, London
We are excited to announce the launch of our first venture into the world of cryptoart in collaboration with contemporary artist Nick Smith
For this debut crypto art release we are heading back to 2015 where it all began with Smith, releasing the first images he produced featuring his colour-chip collage aesthetic, re-imagined for the digital art age.
We are releasing these new digital artworks as Non Fungible Tokens (NFTs), each available as an edition of 50 via our OpenSea page between 28th - 30th April.
Note: These works will not be re-released as physical artworks as they already exist as printed editions.
These images are only available to buy for a maximum of 72 hours or until they all sell
ABOUT THE RELEASE
With the pixelated and mechanical precision of Nick Smith's work, it feels like an NFT was a natural next step for the artist who explores art and culture through a pixelated, digital, lens. As a contemporary artist committed to experimenting with new forms and techniques, Nick Smith is excited to announce 3 newly released images as NFT's based on his hugely popular sold out printed editions inspired from his 2015 Psycolourgy series.
These images were the very first editions Smith released in his familiar ‘colour chip’ style. In offering these images as NFT’s, this newly granted opportunity presents the chance to rework his classics for a new digital audience. It reaffirms the images as timeless; their journey from old masters to contemporary art and now to digital art.
The release of these 3 images, 'Van Gogh', 'Mona Lisa' & 'Girl With A Pink Earring', offers collectors the chance to own an authorised image of a work scarcely seen on the market.
HOW TO PURCHASE
In order to purchase an NFT, you'll need to have a crypto currency supported wallet and use, or purchase, some Ethereum (ETH) to the value of the art you want to buy. Ethereum can be purchased through a number of reputable providers including Coinbase or Binance
Once you have purchased EHT, you'll need to use your digital wallet to make the purchase of the NFT.
If you're on a desktop computer, you'll need to install a wallet extension for your browser, such as MetaMask. You'll also need to fund your account with EHT in order to purchase the art.
All this can be achieved in the time prior to our release & are free to setup

NICK SMITH
'Van Gogh NFT'
Honouring one of Nick’s first print editions released back in 2014, this NFT is a nod to where it all began.
For the original edition, Nick reworked one of Van Gogh’s most famous self portraits, and in true Nick Smith style, pixalised the original image into 380 colour chips, adding a unique word associated to each colour chip below.
The ‘Van Gogh NFT’ will be a new digital version of the 2014 edition, with the same word-colour associations, but instead of a screen printed physical work, this piece will only exist as a digital file with a unique blockchain embedded.
This NFT marks an interesting moment in art history, where old master meets crypto. Whilst this isn’t the first time Van Gogh’s work has been immortalised in digital form; from the animation film ‘Loving Vincent’ to the digital exhibition at the Atelier des Lumières in Paris.

'Mona Lisa NFT'
Introducing the 'Mona Lisa NFT’, which reimagines the iconic painting by Leonardo Da Vinci. Taking inspiration from his 2015 Psycoloury Series, Nick later released the Mona Lisa as a limited print edition. This NFT represents a debut experiment with digital collage.

NICK SMITH
'Girl with the Pink Earring NFT'
Nick Smith created ‘Girl With The Pink Earring’ in 2015. The edition of 100 was inspired by his first solo show ‘Psycolourgy’ which saw a collection of old master paintings reworked as colour-chip collages. This show saw Nick push this experimental concept and his impressive colour-theory skill to new levels, producing his own coloured chips and ascribing individual words he associated with that colour. Nick further injected his own unique signature to the famous work, by giving Vermeer’s girl a pink earring.
Now 6 years on, Nick is revisiting this famous panting by Johannes Vermeer, transforming the dutch portrait into an NFT digital print. The evolution of this famous work continues…

PIONEERS
Exhibition Dates:
22nd October - 28th November, 2020
The exhibition explores and remasters canonised North American art and culture, from Grant Wood, Edward Hopper and Chuck Close to The Simpsons. It is a celebration of iconic American art and design, and how a simple bottle of Coca-Cola has intertwined with art, design history and culture.
The exhibition will feature a new series of works Nick Smith created over the past year. Thematically, the exhibition explores and remasters canonised North American art and culture, from Grant Wood, Edward Hopper and Chuck Close to The Simpsons. It is a celebration of iconic American art and design, and how a simple bottle of Coca-Cola has intertwined with art, design history and culture.
North America has great resonance with Smith. His deep-rooted fascination began in early childhood. He coveted the exotic and glamorous American fashion labels his friends brandished after returning from the States. Notably, with an increasing demand for his works in the States, Smith’s American market continues to grow. After the success of his Purgatory show at Context Art Miami last December, Smith is set to have his first solo show in New York in 2021, which was cancelled this year when the border closed.
In this series, Smith incorporates his method of word-colour associations he has coined “psycolourgy”, combining text and image to create intriguing and provocative collaged works. On the surface, we see colour-chips that playfully pixelate iconic artwork and popular culture, but if we step closer, the image is abstracted and the words become readable. Each pixel corresponds to a word, creating either complimentary or subversive meanings.

“Every country has a Mona Lisa. When I think of the US... it has to be Grant Wood's American Gothic.”
Psycolourgy
Noun: Using word / colour association to create text within art.
"Using Psycolourgy allows the greatest expression of my personality. My thoughts, memories and opinions, influenced by my current social, emotional and geographical experiences, bleed into the work as each colour conjures its name. At the time of this work’s conception, I happened to be in the 2020 lockdown, with additional family members, fairly isolated, on the West Coast of Scotland.
My piece presents a subtle palette of subdued natural colours. Peaceful at first glance, much like the source artwork, but upon closer investigation, the text reveals some uneasy associations." - Nick Smith

Nick Smith x Rhodes' x NHS Charity Raffle
Hello Everyone,
With the widespread COVID-19 pandemic still ever present in our daily lives, we are all doing everything we can to help those we love and care for, even if that's by simply staying at home.
With that in mind, it was decided we should do something more. So, after a quick chat, we agreed we should collaborate with Rhodes Contemporary Art to present a special charity raffle of a unique original artwork; with every penny going straight to NHS Charities Together.
The artwork we are raffling is a specially created, unique, original Nick Smith 'Haring Dog' presented in the distinctive NHS Blue colour with an accompanying signed hand-written note by the artist as well as full provenance backed by the gallery.
The image is taken from my sold out ‘Haring Dog’ print released last year, and all you have to do to have a chance of winning is donate a very small, but significant, £20 per entry. The money is literally going from you to NHS Charities Together via JustGiving.
As with any raffle the more tickets you buy, the greater chance you have to win!
To enter, donate £20 via the link below, and you will be entered into a draw.
The winner will be chosen at random and contacted on Tuesday 12th May.
100% of the proceeds will go to NHS Charities together
(Charity Registration No. 1186569)
Note: Once your donation has gone through, tick the box alongside “I'm happy to be contacted by Rhodes”. JustGiving can then share your contact details with us and we can contact you if you have won the artwork.
Gallery staff will be donating to the cause, but will not be entered into the draw to win.
Good Luck!
"30 years ago, Keith Haring died from an incurable virus. 30 years later we have another incurable virus turning our lives upside down. Thankfully we have the NHS to ease that suffering. This Haring Dog original 1 of 1 collage on paper in 'NHS Blue' is looking for a new home and the proceeds from this raffle will go towards supporting the NHS in the fight against Covid 19"
